Menostar Information:

What is Menostar?

Menostar is a transdermal patch that contains estradiol, a type of estrogen hormone. Menopausal women experience a decrease in the production of estrogen in the ovaries which increases the rate of bone resorption and decreases the rate of bone formation. This results in bone loss over time. By augmenting the supply of estrogen, this process of bone loss can be slowed or prevented.

How do I take Menostar?

Before applying a Menostar patch, clean and dry the application area. The patch should be worn on the lower abdomen or on the upper part of the buttock, and the application site should be rotated. Never wear the patch in the same spot for two weeks in a row. Only open the pouch containing a patch just before applying it. Press the patch firmly into place for at least 10 seconds. Make sure the patch adheres well, especially around the edges. Your Menostar patch should be changed after 7 days. Remove the patch slowly and carefully to avoid skin irritation. If any adhesive remains on the skin, it may be removed with an oil or lotion. Fold the used patch in half so that it sticks together and throw it in the trash.

Before taking Menostar, tell your doctor if:

  • You have endometriosis
  • You have seizures
  • You get migraine headaches
  • You have ever had uterine fibroids
  • You kidney or liver disease
  • You have ever had jaundice
  • You have abnormal calcium levels
  • You have a thyroid condition
  • You have a clotting disorder
  • You have gallbladder disease or heart disease
  • You’ve ever had a stroke or heart attack
  • You have porphyria
  • You have diabetes or problems with your pancreas
  • You are taking any prescription or nonprescription drugs or herbal supplements, including St. John’s wort, antifungals, seizure medications, antibiotics, antivirals, HIV medications, estrogen drugs or any medications that affect hormone levels, thyroid medications and any others
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You have ever had any estrogen-dependent cancers
  • You smoke cigarettes
  • You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Menostar patches

What are the possible side effects of taking Menostar?

Menostar drug side effects may include bloating, indigestion, nausea, acne, changes in skin color, increased facial hair, headache, stuffy nose, breast swelling and tenderness, spotting and changes in menstruation. If any of these side effects are severe, or they don’t go away over time, tell your doctor. Some serious side effects you should report immediately include breast lumps, sudden cough, rapid breathing, jaundice, heavy vaginal bleeding, dangerously high blood pressure, vision changes, severe headaches, nipple discharge and pain, swelling or warmth in one or both legs. Also be aware of the signs of a stroke or heart attack.

What if I forget to take a dose of Menostar?

If you forget to apply a new patch, apply it as soon as you remember and then follow the 7-day schedule. If the patch falls off in the middle of the week, apply a new patch for the remainder of the 7 days.

How do I store Menostar?

Keep Menostar patches closed in their pouches until you are ready to apply one. Store the patches at a temperature below 86 degrees Fahrenheit, and keep them out of reach of children and pets. Used patches still contain estradiol, and they should be folded in half so that the medication side of the patch is stuck shut before disposing of them.

What happens if I overdose on Menostar?

Signs of overdose on Menostar may include withdrawal bleeding, nausea and vomiting. If you think your estradiol dose is too high, talk to your doctor.

Warnings

Never apply Menostar patches near the breasts or over irritated or broken skin. If you have not had your uterus removed, you should take progestin while using Menostar. Taking estrogen drugs can increase your risk of developing a blood clot and having a stroke or heart attack.
