Oxazepam Information:

Oxazepam is a generic benzodiazepine drug that is prescribed to relieve anxiety. Oxazepam helps to relieve anxiety by slowing down brain activity to allow it to relax. This drug may also be prescribed to relieve anxiety in patients experiencing alcohol withdrawal.

Oxazepam comes in capsule form to be taken orally and it is typically prescribed to be taken 3 to 4 times per day. Consult with your doctor for specific directions on how to take this drug and take Oxazepam exactly as directed.

Before using Oxazepam, tell your doctor if:

  • you are allergic to Oxazepam or any other medications

  • you are taking any prescription or over-the-counter medications, vitamins, or supplements

  • you have or have ever had glaucoma or seizures, or lung, heart, or liver disease.

  • you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or if you are breastfeeding

  • you smoke cigarettes or use tobacco products


Additional precautions:

  • Consult with your doctor about the possible risks of taking Oxazepam if you are 65 years of age or older.

  • If you are having surgery of any kind, tell your doctor that you are taking this medication.

  • Oxazepam may cause drowsiness. Do not drive or operate machinery while using this drug until you know how it affects you.

  • Alcohol may increase the drowsiness effect of this medication.

  • Use of tobacco products may decrease the effectiveness of this drug.

  • This drug may not work as well if it is taken over a long period of time.

Contact your doctor if you experience these symptoms and if they do not go away:

  • drowsiness

  • dizziness

  • fatigue

  • weakness

  • dry mouth

  • blurred vision

  • diarrhea, constipation, or upset stomach

  • changes in appetite

  • restlessness or excitement

  • frequent urination or difficulty urinating

  • blurred vision

  • changes in sex drive or ability

Contact your doctor immediately or seek emergency medical attention if you experience any of these symptoms:

  • persistent tremor or inability to sit still

  • irregular heartbeat

  • shuffling walk

  • fever

  • difficulty breathing or swallowing

  • severe skin rash

  • yellowing of the skin or eye

Take your missed dose of Oxazepam as soon as your remember to take it, unless it is almost time for the next dose. If this is the case, skip the missed dose and resume the regular dose schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Store this medication tightly closed when not in use. Store it at room temperature and keep away from excess moisture and heat. Keep this medication out of reach of children and away from pets. Properly dispose of any expired or unnecessary medication.

In case of overdose, call Poison Control (1-800-222-1222) to find out what to do, or seek immediate medical attention.


  • It is possible for the use of Oxazepam to become habit-forming. It is important that you take this drug exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

  • Do not let anyone else use your medication.

Oxazepam is a generic drug. Serax is a brand name version of this drug. These drugs are not the same, so consult with your doctor to determine which treatment is best for you.
