Zmax Information:

What is Zmax?

Zmax is a branded liquid version of the antibiotic azithromycin. It is prescribed to treat bacterial infections, especially sinus infections and certain types of pneumonia. It works by interfering with bacterial protein synthesis and stopping the growth of the bacteria which cures the infection.

How do I take Zmax?

Zmax is a unique formation of this antibiotic because only one dose is required. Most adult doses consist of a bottle containing 2 grams of medication. The entire bottle should be consumed within 12 hours of receiving it, and it should be taken on an empty stomach. Always follow your doctor’s or pharmacist’s instructions. Pediatric doses are usually around 60mg, but your doctor will prescribe the proper dose by weight. If you aren’t prescribed the entire bottle of medication, you should discard the rest after use. This medication will not keep for future use.

Before taking Zmax, tell your doctor if:

  • You have cystic fibrosis or any immune disorders.
  • You are allergic to any of the ingredients in Zmax.
  • You have heart failure.
  • You have an irregular heartbeat.
  • You have low levels of potassium or magnesium.
  • You have kidney or liver disease.
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • You have myasthenia gravis.
  • You have HIV or AIDS.
  • You are taking any other prescription or nonprescription medications, including antacids.

What are the possible side effects of taking Zmax?

Possible Zmax drug side effects include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, upset stomach and headache. Tell your doctor if these side effects are severe or persistent. Other serious but rare side effects include fast or irregular heartbeat, rash, fainting, yellowing skin or eyes, extreme fatigue, sores in the mouth, hearing changes, blurred vision, and severe abdominal pain. If any serious or unusual side effects occur, see your doctor at once.

What if I forget to take a dose of Zmax?

Only one dose of Zmax is required. If 12 hours have passed since you received this medication and you still haven’t taken it, call your pharmacist and ask how you should proceed.

How do I store Zmax?

Store Zmax at a temperature between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Ask your pharmacist about the proper disposal of any remaining medication.

What happens if I overdose on Zmax?

Zmax drug overdose will likely result in exaggerated side effects. If you or someone you know has overdosed on Zmax, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.

Warnings

Serious allergic reactions to Zmax have occurred. If you aren’t sure that you aren’t allergic to this medication, take it before leaving the doctor’s office and make sure you aren’t allergic.
