Aviane Information:
What is Aviane?
A combination of two female hormones, ethinyl estradiol (an estrogen) and levonorgestrel (a progestin), Aviane is a birth control pill that prevents pregnancy by preventing ovulation. In addition, it creates changes to the composition of mucus at the cervix in order to prevent sperm from entering, as well as altering the uterine lining thereby preventing a fertilized egg from attaching to it.
How do I take Aviane?
Aviane is taken orally with water on a daily basis according to your prescription. It may or may not be taken with something to eat, but taking it with food can help prevent nausea. It should be taken at the same time every day. Aviane may be prescribed in cycles of 21, 28, or 91 tablets and it is important to follow the prescription instructions exactly. Do not increase or decrease the dosage, alter the frequency, or take it for longer than your doctor prescribes.
Before taking Aviane, tell your doctor if:
- You smoke.
- You are allergic to estrogen, progestin, or other medications.
- You are breast feeding, pregnant, or plan to become pregnant.
- You have, or have had, breast, cervical, endometrial, ovarian, liver, or uterine cancer.
- You have blood vessel disease, blood clots, high blood pressure, high cholesterol.
- You have abnormal vaginal bleeding.
- You have diabetes.
- You have gallbladder, liver, or kidney disease.
- You have heart disease.
- You have had a stroke or a recent heart attack.
- You have systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).
- You have migraine headaches.
- You are taking birth control medications with drosperinone, ACE inhibitors, or diuretics.
- You are taking any medications, whether over-the-counter and/or prescribed, as well as any vitamins or supplements, including potassium supplements.
What are the possible side effects of taking Aviane? As with any medication, there are possible side effects from taking Aviane. Among them are nausea, vomiting, bloating, appearance of facial hair, increased hair growth, freckles or other skin darkening, weight change, changes in your menstrual cycle, increased menstrual flow, diminished sex drive, headaches, dizziness, hair loss, vaginal itching, vaginal discharge, swelling, tenderness or painful breasts.
In addition, there may be an allergic reaction to this medication. Signs of such include heaviness in the chest or chest pain, sudden onset of weakness or numbing of one side of the body, an increase in frequency or severity of migraine headaches, jaundice, darkening of the urine, and other symptoms. If you experience these or other reactions, contact your physician immediately.
This list is not exhaustive. If you notice anything unusual after you begin taking this medication, contact your doctor.
What if I forget to take a dose of Aviane?
If you forget to take a dose of Aviane birth control, refer directly to the information packet that came with your prescription for complete details. Generally speaking:
- If you forget to take an active dose of Aviane birth control, take two pills at the next scheduled time, then continue with the normal dosage pattern.
- If you miss two consecutive doses in Week One or Week Two, take two pills per day for two days in a row, then resume your normal dosing pattern. If you miss three consecutive active does in the first three weeks, discard the remainder and start a new one on your normal Day 1. If your normal start day is Sunday, dispose of the remainder, and start again on that day.
- If you miss two or more consecutive doses in Week Three, discard the remainder of the pack and start a new one on what would be the normal Day 1 of the cycle. If you start on Sundays, continue taking a dose each day until then; at that point, discard the remainder and begin a new one.
- You will need to use back up birth control for at least seven days if you miss doses. However, if you take reminder pills and forget one, you will not need additional birth control measures or backup contraception. Discard the missed pill and continue with your Aviane dosage until the pack is empty.
How do I store Aviane?
Keep Aviane in its original packaging and store it out of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature (below 60° or above 85°). Discard any unused pills according to your pharmacist’s recommendations.
What happens if I overdose on Aviane?
The symptoms of an overdose of Aviane include nausea, vomiting, and/or vaginal bleeding. If you believed you have taken too much of this medication, seek emergency medical help by calling 911 or your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222.
Warnings
Smoking while taking Aviane or other oral contraceptives increases the chances of a stroke, heart attack, and blood clots, especially in older women (those over 35) or women who smoke and those who smoke fifteen or more cigarettes per day face. Oral contraceptives do not prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) including HIV, so other precautions should be taken. It may be difficult to become pregnant for a period after you stop taking Aviane.
