Bacitracin Information:
Bacitracin is a polypeptide antibiotic, available topically for the skin in an OTC variety or as an ophthalmic ointment by prescription. Either way, the formulation is similar and fights infection in small cuts and wounds.
Usage will depend on the formulation; follow the instructions on the label or as directed by your doctor. Clean the skin area before each application. You can apply the medication one to three times daily and may cover it with a bandage.
Before using bacitracin, tell your doctor if:
· You are allergic to the medication, mineral oil, or petroleum jelly
· You are breastfeeding or pregnant
· You want to use it to treat animal bites, puncture wounds, deep skin wounds, or severe burns
For the ophthalmic ointment, side effects that do not require medical attention are temporary blurred vision and tearing, or feeling like something is in the eye. Contact your doctor if more serious side effects occur, including the following: burning, stinging, or itching of the eyes or eyelids; changes in vision, chest tightness, lower back pain, redness, swelling, or pain of the eyes or eyelids; painful urination, or difficulty passing urine.
You should take bacitracin as needed or as directed by your doctor. Do not exceed the maximum dosage suggested by the label or your physician.
Store bacitracin at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Do not freeze this medication.
You should seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222 if you believe that you or someone in your home is experiencing symptoms of an overdose.
Warnings
Over-the-counter bacitracin topical is for use on the skin only; do not use in your eyes, nose, mouth, rectum or vagina. If you do get it in any of these areas by accident, rinse it off with water immediately. For bacitracin ophthalmic ointment, do not wear contact lenses if you have an eye infection and discuss with your optometrist when you can begin wearing them again.
