What is norethindrone?
Norethindrone is a birth control pill containing the female hormone progestin. Most birth control drugs contain both progestin and estrogen, and norethindrone may be the best option for women who cannot use an oral contraceptive containing estrogen. The norethindrone drug helps prevent pregnancy by causing vaginal fluid to thicken, making it more difficult for sperm to fertilize an egg, and changing the lining of the uterus, making it more difficult for a fertilized egg to attach. Norethindrone is a more effective form of birth control than condoms, but it is not as effective as birth control drugs containing both estrogen and progestin because it does not consistently prevent ovulation.
How do I take norethindrone?
Start taking norethindrone on the first day of your period, and continue taking one pill per day, at the same time every day. As soon as you finish one package, start another one. Unlike some other birth control drugs, a norethindrone package does not have any “reminder” pills (tablets without hormones), meaning that it is important to take every pill in the package. Missing pills or taking them at inconsistent times increases your likelihood of becoming pregnant.
Before taking norethindrone, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to any of the ingredients in norethindrone pills
- You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription drugs or supplements
- You have undiagnosed vaginal bleeding
- You have recently had an abortion or incomplete miscarriage
- You had had breast cancer
- You have had a stroke, blood clot, or other circulation problems
- You have high blood pressure or any heart problems
- You have kidney or liver disease
- You get severe migraines
- You have high cholesterol or triglycerides
- You have a seizure disorder
- You have asthma
- You are a smoker
- You have a history of mental illness
- You are breastfeeding
What are the possible side effects of taking norethindrone?
Norethindrone may cause irregular periods or light bleeding in between periods in the first few months that you use it. If you miss two periods in a row, contact your doctor. Other common side effects may include headache, nausea, vomiting, breast tenderness, bloating, vaginal itching, increased acne or hair growth, or weight gain. Side effects often subside as your body adjusts to a new medication, but let your doctor know if you have any persistent or bothersome conditions. Stop taking norethindrone and contact your doctor immediately if you experience sudden numbness on one side of your body, problems with balance or speech, confusion, pain or swelling in your legs, severe migraines, severe pelvic pain, severe nausea, chest or stomach pain, dark-colored urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice, or signs of depression.
What if I forget to take a dose of norethindrone?
It is important that you take norethindrone pills at the same time and refill your prescription before it runs out. If you do miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose. In this case, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosage schedule. If you take your dose more than three hours later than usual, use a backup method of birth control, such as condoms, for the next 48 hours.
How do I store norethindrone?
Keep the norethindrone drug at room temperature, away from bright light and moisture (do not store it in the bathroom). Do not remove any of your norethindrone pills from their packaging until you are ready to use them, and keep your birth control medication out of reach of any children or pets in your home.
What happens if I overdose on norethindrone?
Overdosing on norethindrone can be very dangerous and may lead to abnormal vaginal bleeding, severe nausea, and vomiting. If you or someone in your home has overdosed, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 right away. Go to the nearest emergency room if the person who overdosed is experiencing severe side effects.
Warnings
Norethindrone will help prevent pregnancy, but it will not protect against sexually transmitted diseases. Do not smoke while using norethindrone, as smoking increases your risk of blood clots, heart attack, and stroke. If you have been a heavy smoker, talk to your doctor to determine if it is safe for you to use hormonal birth control. Norethindrone may make your skin more sensitive to the sun, so avoid prolonged sun exposure and tanning booths.
