Safyral Information:
Safyral is an oral contraceptive containing an estrogen and a progestin (both female hormones). It stops an egg from being released during menstruation and makes vaginal fluid thicker to prevent pregnancy. It does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases. It also contains a form of vitamin B called levomefolate and can be used to treat acne and PMDD.
How do I take Safyral?
If you have not taken Safyral before, take the first pill in the packet the first Sunday following the start of your menstrual period. Take one pill at the same time every day, in the order they are placed in the packet so that you are taking the inactive reminder pills on the fourth week. If you have an easily upset stomach, take this medication after eating. If you are not switching from another hormonal birth control, you will need to use back-up contraception (such as a condom) for 7 days.
Before taking Safyral, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to any of the ingredients in this medication or have any other allergies
- You are taking any other prescription or over-the-counter medications or supplements
- You have a history of adrenal gland or thyroid problems
- You have had blood clots or have a blood clotting disorder
- You have diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol
- You have a history or family history of cancer
- You have had an abnormal breast exam
- You have a history of depression
- You have a history of gallbladder problems
- You regularly experience severe headaches
- You have kidney or liver disease
- You have any heart problems
- You have had jaundice during pregnancy or while taking other oral contraceptives
- You have experienced unexplained vaginal bleeding
- You are breastfeeding, pregnant, or may become pregnant
What are the possible side effects of taking Safyral?
As a medication containing female hormones, Safyral may cause breast tenderness, weight changes, abdominal cramps, headache, nausea, vomiting, and fluid retention (swelling or bloating). It is relatively common for spotting or missed periods to occur during the first few months of use as your body adjusts to the medication. If you have any side effects that persist or are bothersome, tell your doctor. Contact your doctor immediately if you notice any breast lumps, unusual changes in vaginal bleeding, unusual mental state changes, severe abdominal pain, muscle weakness, and irregular heartbeat, dark urine, or jaundice.
What if I forget to take a dose of Safyral?
You must take Safyral on a daily basis in order for it to be most effective in preventing pregnancy. Review the instructions on the product package to determine what to do if you miss a dose, and contact your doctor if you have missed multiple doses. After missing a dose, you may need to use a back-up method of birth control for several weeks.
How do I store Safyral?
Keep Safyral at room temperature and away from moisture and light. As with all prescription medications, keep it out of reach of any pets or children in your household. If you no longer need this medication but have leftover pills, ask your pharmacist how to safely dispose of them.
What happens if I overdose on Safyral?
Overdosing on Safyral may cause severe nausea, vomiting, unusual vaginal bleeding, or other serious side effects. Contact Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 or go to the nearest emergency room if you or someone in your household has overdosed on this medication.
Warnings
If you have diabetes, talk to your doctor about how Safyral can affect your blood sugar levels, and make sure you know the warning signs of high blood sugar. Safyral may increase your risk for blood clots, so let your doctor know if you will be on bed rest or sitting for an extended period of time while using this medication. Avoid tanning booths or prolonged sun exposure, as Safyral may cause dark or blotchy patches to appear on your skin.
