Viorele Information:
What is Viorele?
Viorele is a contraceptive that combines an estrogen (ethinyl estradiol) and a progestin (desogestrel) to stop ovulation and to alter the composition of cervical mucus and the uterine lining to prevent an egg from attaching to the uterine wall. This medication may also be prescribed to women to help control acne or to those with premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PDD).
How do I take Viorele?
Viorele is an oral contraceptive sold in packets of 28 tablets; the first twenty-one pills contain the active medications with the remainder are “reminder” pills to facilitate schedule maintenance. Take the first pill on the first day of your menstrual cycle or on the Sunday immediately following its start, then continue to take each of the tablets in the package, one per day, in the designated order until the packet is exhausted. Viorele can be taken with food or milk to prevent nausea. Begin a new cycle of pills the day after you finish one packet. Those who are taking oral contraceptives for the first time should use alternative methods of birth control for the first seven days. Discontinuing this medication increases the risk of pregnancy.
Before taking Viorele, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to desogestrel, ethinyl estradiol, progestin, estrogen, or any of the ingredients in the Viorele;
- You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or are nursing a child
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, vitamins, or supplements
- You have a family history of heart or cardiovascular disease, problems, or conditions including tachycardia, bradycardia, arrhythmia
- You have high cholesterol or triglyceride levels
- You have a history of blood clots, especially in the eyes, legs, or lungs
- You have diabetes
- You have kidney disease or liver disease
- You have a family history of cervical, vaginal, uterine, or breast cancer
- You have a family history of obesity
- You are a smoker
What are the possible side effects of taking Viorele?
Mild side effects of Viorele may include a changes to the menstrual cycle, tender or swollen breasts, a whitish vaginal discharge, vaginal itching, altered skin color, problems with contact lenses, or weight changes. Call your doctor right away if you have any rare but serious side effects, including vision problems, loss of appetite, blood clots, breast lumps, bulging eyes, changes in stool color, severe headaches, changes in the frequency or severity of migraines, coughing up blood, crushing chest pain, darkened urine, depression, disorientation, dizziness, extreme tiredness or weakness, fainting, leg pain, balance problems, heavy menstrual bleeding or bleeding lasting longer than seven days, extreme mood changes; severe stomach pain or vomiting; speech problems, symptoms of jaundice, unusual bleeding or bruising, or weakness or numbing in the arms or legs.
What if I forget to take a dose of Viorele?
If you forget to take one of your Viorele pills, follow the instructions that accompanied the prescription or contact your doctor for information. Because missing a pill increases the risk of pregnancy, use an alternative birth control measure for seven to ten days or until the end of the cycle. Do not alter the dosing regimen unless directed by the instructions included in the medication or approved by your doctor.
How do I store Viorele?
Keep Viorele tightly sealed in its original packaging, out of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Do not remove any pill from the package until you are ready to take it.
What happens if I overdose on Viorele?
If an overdose of Viorele is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911. Signs of an overdose include severe nausea and vaginal bleeding.
