What is atorvastatin?
Atorvastatin is a drug in the HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (or statin) class that is prescribed, along with diet and an exercise program, to patients with high cholesterol in order to reduce HDL (“bad” cholesterol) and triglyceride levels while raising LDL (“good” cholesterol) levels. It is also prescribed to those with Type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, or other heart problems to help lessen the risk of a heart attack, stroke, or other heart complications. This medication works by slowing the body’s production of cholesterol, preventing its buildup along arterial walls.
How do I take atorvastatin?
Atorvastatin medicine is administered in tablet form and taken orally once a day with water, with or without food. However, the exact dosing regimen will be determined by the patient’s medical profile. Follow the instructions that accompanied the prescription exactly. Continue to take this medication even if you feel well, and do not stop taking it without first contacting your doctor.
Before taking atorvastatin, tell your doctor if:

What are the possible side effects of taking atorvastatin?
Some people have reported side effects after taking atorvastatin. Less severe symptoms include confusion, memory loss, diarrhea, forgetfulness, gas, heartburn, or joint pain. If any of these conditions persist or worsen, contact your healthcare provider.
Severe side effects requiring immediate medical attention include signs of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, itching, peeling or blistered skin; swelling of the face, mouth, lips, throat, or tongue; hoarseness; difficulty breathing or swallowing); chest pain; darkly colored urine; weakness, extreme tiredness, or a lack of energy; fever or flu-like symptoms; appetite loss; weak, tender, or painful muscles; nausea; pain in the upper right part of the stomach; swelling in the extremities; unusual bleeding or bruising; symptoms of jaundice.
What if I forget to take a dose of atorvastatin?
If you forget to take the scheduled dose of the atorvastatin medicine, do so as soon as your remember and are able. However, if there a fewer than twelve hours until the time for the next scheduled dose, skip the one missed and resume the regular schedule. Do not increase the dosage or alter the schedule to make up for a missed dose.
How do I store atorvastatin?
Keep your atorvastatin medicine tightly sealed in its original container, out of the reach of children and away from extremes of temperature and humidity. Ask your pharmacist for the best method to dispose of any unused or expired tablets.
What happens if I overdose on atorvastatin?
If an overdose of the atorvastatin drug is suspected, contact the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. If the individual has stopped breathing or lost consciousness, contact Emergency Services at 911.

Contact your doctor if you become pregnant while taking atorvastatin. Do not drink more than a quart of grapefruit juice per day while taking this medication. Drinking alcohol while taking this drug can exacerbate its side effects. If you are having surgery (including dental), tell your doctor you are taking atorvastatin.
