Gemfibrozil Information:
What is Gemfibrozil?
Gemfibrozil belongs to a group of drugs known as fibrates. In essence, it decreases the amount of fat produced by the liver. In so doing, it can actually help pancreatic function, and lower the risk of pancreatitis. It also increases the body’s level of HDLs, helping the body to naturally lower the levels of bad cholesterol.
How do I take Gemfibrozil?
Gemfibrozil is administered orally, generally taken twice a day. It should be taken half an hour before eating. It should not be taken with other heart medications. If other medications are prescribed, they should be separated from Gemfibrozil dosing by at least one hour. The medication should be taken at the same time every day, even if symptoms disappear.
Before taking Gemfibrozil, tell your doctor if:
- You are taking any other cholesterol lowering drug
- You have a history of kidney or liver problems
- You are pregnant or plan to become pregnant while taking Gemfibrozil
- You are breast-feeding
What are the possible side effects of taking Gemfibrozil?
Gemfibrozil is known to cause allergic reaction in some patients, so contact your doctor immediately if you experience hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of your face, lips, tongues, or throat. Other serious side effects can include a sharp pain in the stomach, especially after eating, yellowing of the skin or eyes, blurred or distorted vision, pain or burning during urination, or paled and overly sensitive skin.
If you experience any of these side effects, contact a medical professional immediately. More common symptoms include upset stomach, mild stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea, mild joint or muscle pain, sexual difficulty, numbness, or general cold symptoms.
What if I forget to take a dose of Gemfibrozil?
For optimal efficacy, try to take Gemfibrozil at the same time every day. If you do miss a dose, take the missed dose as soon as remembered. If it is close to the next scheduled dose, skipped the missed dose and resume your normal dosage schedule. Do not take a double dose.
How do I store Gemfibrozil?
Store Gemfibrozil in a sealed container at room temperature away from light and humidity. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Do not flush extra or expired medication, but dispose of them as instructed by a doctor.
What happens if I overdose on Gemfibrozil?
If you suspect an overdose, contact a poison control center immediately or visit an emergency room. Symptoms of an overdose can include severe stomach cramps or other stomach discomfort.
Warnings
Do not take Gemfibrozil if you have a history of liver or gall bladder failure. It is not known how Gemfibrozil affects children. It is also not known how Gemfibrozil affects unborn fetuses or whether it is transferred into breast milk, so do not take Gemfibrozil if you are pregnant or nursing. Because Gemfibrozil carries a strong risk of interactions with other medications, keep your doctor informed of any changes to your medication schedule. Keep a list of your medications on you at all times for emergency personnel.
