Lovastatin Information:
“What is lovastatin?” is a question patients with high cholesterol might very well ask if their doctors mention the prescription medication. Lovastatin prevents cholesterol from building up on the artery walls, where it would impede blood flow and inhibit the supply of oxygen to the body. The medication does this by slowing the body’s cholesterol production. By reducing cholesterol and allowing for healthy blood flow, lovastatin helps reduce the risk of chest pain, strokes, heart attacks, and heart disease.
How do I take lovastatin?
Lovastatin medication is taken by mouth, typically once or twice a day with food. Follow the instructions on your prescription label, and never take more than is recommended. If you are prescribed the extended release version of lovastatin, make sure that you swallow the pill rather than splitting it in half, chewing it, or crushing it.
Lovastatin must be taken on a regular basis to be most effective; do not stop taking it without consulting your doctor, even if you feel that you no longer need it.
Before taking lovastatin, tell your doctor if:
- You are allergic to this medication or have any other known allergies
- You have a history or family history of alcohol abuse, or you typically have more than two alcoholic drinks per day
- You are pregnant, may become pregnant, or are breastfeeding
- You have liver disease or kidney disease
- You are taking any other prescription or non-prescription medications
What are the possible lovastatin side effects?
While many people take lovastatin medication without experiencing any significant side effects, this drug may infrequently cause constipation, forgetfulness, or confusion. Other rare lovastatin side effects may include fatigue, fever, nausea, swelling of the face, dark-colored urine, muscle weakness, yellowing of the skin and eyes, difficulty breathing, and stomach pain. While these side effects are uncommon, you should still pay close attention to how lovastatin affects you and inform your doctor if you experience any unusual changes.
What if I forget to take a dose of lovastatin?
It is best to take lovastatin at the same time every day. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule.
How do I store lovastatin?
Keep your lovastatin medication at room temperature, away from light and moisture and out of reach of children and pets. Avoid storing this medication in the bathroom, and do not dispose of expired or unneeded pills by flushing them down the toilet or washing them down the drain unless your pharmacist tells you to do so.
What happens if I overdose on lovastatin?
If you overdose on lovastatin, call your local poison control center. If someone in your household collapses or stops breathing due to a lovastatin overdose, call 911 immediately.
Warnings
Regular use of alcohol combined with lovastatin can increase your risk of liver disease and other serious side effects, so talk to your doctor about your drinking habits before taking this medication.
Lovastatin can cause fetal harm, so tell your doctor if you are pregnant or may become pregnant. If you are currently taking this medication and think you may be pregnant, inform your doctor immediately. Due to the possibility that lovastatin could pass into breast milk, you should also avoid taking this medication if you are breastfeeding.
Do not consume grapefruit products while taking lovastatin, as grapefruit and the lovastatin drug may interact and cause dangerous side effects. You should also avoid foods that are high in fat and cholesterol, as lovastatin is most effective when combined with a low-cholesterol diet.
Brand Names
Lovastatin is sold as a generic drug, but extended release lovastatin is available under the brand name Altoprev. Another brand name, Advicor, is a combination of lovastatin and niacin.
